About us

Welcome to the Division of Integrative Fisheries Management (IFishMan) at the Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture, Faculty of Life Sciences at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU). We also work at the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB).

We are devoted to produce robust insights and recommendations for sustainable capture fisheries, particularly in relation to freshwater recreational fisheries. Led by Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus we take an inter- and transdisciplinary research approach, conceptualizing recreational fisheries as coupled social-ecological systems.

Many solutions to sustainable fisheries rest on human behavior, which is why a purely natural scientific research approach would be incomplete. We therefore built bridges among fisheries ecology and applied social and economic studies and study angler attitudes and behaviours in addition to fish population dynamics. Our practically oriented research is based on profound theoretical and analytical frameworks, employing both empirical and modelling approaches.

We cooperate with a range of leading universities and groups in Germany and abroad. The “communities of practice” and stakeholders we work with include angling clubs, angler associations, fisheries agencies and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.
