With an area of about 400 000 km2, the Baltic Sea is one of the largest brackish water habitats in the world and a living environment for both marine and stenohaline freshwater species (Larsson et al., 2015; Szymczycha et al., 2019). The coastline of the German part of the Baltic Sea is 2,250 km long (Baumann and Schernewski, 2012).
