For the Department of Biology and Ecology of Fishes of IGB in Berlin-Friedrichshagen we are inviting applications for the position of Scientist of
Spatial Fish and Fisheries Ecology with a starting date as soon as possible, but ideally no later than January, 1, 2021.
The position is in the working group of Prof. Dr. Robert Arlinghaus (www.ifishman.de) and is part of the transdisciplinary Boddenhecht project (www.boddenhecht-forschung.de), which studies the ecology and exploitation of Baltic Sea pike (Esox lucius) around Rügen. The scientist will be integrated in a multidisciplinary team who jointly help developing management recommendations in cooperation with stakeholders, based on sound social-ecological science contributed by the team. The scientist shall examine the spatial ecology, exploitation and metapopulation structure of northern pike in cooperation with other team members and external partners. A core component of the work will be managing and analysing acoustic telemetry data on the movements of pike. A network of 140 receivers has already been installed in the lagoons of Rügen, and 300 pike have been equipped with transmitters, which are now producing data. Depending on the interest of the candidate this core data set can be complemented by mark-recapture, growth, otolith microchemistry or population genetics data (the latter led by Prof. Dr. Arne Nolte at the University of Oldenburg) to better understand the spatial ecology of pike around Rügen from a meta-population perspective.
Key responsibilities and duties
- Managing and analysing acoustic telemetry data of pike recorded by a network of 140 receivers in cooperation with an external partner hired for downloads
- Researching the spatial ecology and exploitation of pike using complementary ecological methods
- Presenting and publishing the results in the primary literature and at academic and non-academic stakeholder meetings
- Contributing to project management and a participatory stakeholder process
- Co-supervising students and supervising interns
- M.Sc. in fisheries biology, fish/wildlife biology, marine science, aquatic ecology or a related degree
- Essential: Documented skills in fish and fisheries ecological field methods, preferably experience with fish telemetry
- Essential: Ability to spending significant field time outside home
- Essential: Ability to lead a field team as well as work independently, including well developed organizational skills
- Essential: English language and car driving license
- Highly desirable: Very well developed quantitative statistical skills and German language
- Desirable: GIS and related skills of spatial data visualization
- Desirable: Boat driving license for the coast/sea and if that is not available willingness to acquire the license in German
We offer an interesting position in an international and dynamic scientific environment whose aspiration is to develop research results that have practical implications for sustainable fisheries. Salary is paid according to the German salary scheme for the public sector (TVöD Bund). It is a full-time position with 39 working hours per week and is then limited to 2 years. The position can also be filled as a part-time position at 66% and is then limited to 3 years, with the potential to write a PhD thesis.>
